The Wright brothers started a revolution in transportation when they invented the aircraft. Solar Impulse, is about to improve it.
So what is Solar Impulse? Basically, it’s the only airplane of perpetual endurance, and it’s able to fly day and night on solar power, and best of all, won’t use any fuel. At all.
They embarked on a mission to make flying possible without any fuel at all. Swiss Re joined them and now they created a revolutionary feat which will forever change the history of aviation and change how people perceive solar energy.
Solar Impulse 2 is powered with energy from the Sun and can make it around the world where it will start from Abu Dhabi, and return to the same point but from the other side of the Earth. They made the wings much larger in dimensions (bigger than the Boeing 747) and they have a wingspan of 72 meters in length and weigh 2.300 KG.
The plane is powered by four electric motors which run on solar energy and a supply of 17.000 photovoltaic cells stored in batteries. Basically, it can reach 8.500 meters altitude and travel at a speed of 140 km/h. The cockpit is almost 4 cubic meters and includes a small toilet for the pilots (by the way – they are trained to sleep in periods of only 20 minutes) and they also have an inflight meal specially designed for the mission. Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard are the two people responsible to prove the world that solar power is the way to go!
We will definitely get better acquainted with clean energy.
