In the desert of Northern New Mexico, you might hear some sounds of a man who is working underground in a cave. There is a very small entry that is opening into a cavern, where this man called Ra Paulette has spent the last 25 years carving the New Mexico sandstone and turning it into a great magnificent piece of art. For the whole time, the only friend that kept him company was his dog.
When people asked him if he thinks he is obsessed with cave digging, he gave an immediate and very thoughtful response: “is a child obsessed with play”? When you love what you do, it doesn’t matter how much time do you spent doing it. This man has the ability to see these majestic places as environmental projects and his goal is to inspire people to become more emotionally opened in response to the power of what actually his carvings are evoking.
In these underground caves that he carved, he created magic.
At the same time, his art is intimate but as well overwhelming. The interesting part is that Ra doesn’t really identify himself as an artist, but just a simple man who is expressing his sense of wonder in a very idealistic and passionate way. Well, we wouldn’t agree that he isn’t and artist because what he managed to create is absolutely amazing and very powerful.
You can find out more about this story in the video above. It will give you a tour of his magnificent pieces of art in these underground caves. It is quite unbelievable, but his work wasn’t really known before a filmmaker decided to make a documentary about it. It is called “Cave Digger”, and it ended up winning an academy award.
This is nothing like you’ve seen before. Check for yourself.
