Ever heard of ‘Earthing’ before?
If you haven’t, you’re not alone. But according to recent studies, ‘Earthing’ could be a potential solution to a whole range of problems, such as chronic degenerative diseases, insomnia and even stress.
Now I’m sure you’re wondering: what the hell is ‘Earthing’?!
Don’t fear, it’s easy to understand.
Earthing simply involves placing your feet directly on the ground without shoes or socks so your feet gets in direct contact with the intense negative charge carried by the Earth.
This charge is “electron-rich”, which serves as a good supply of antioxidants and free-radical destroying electrons.
Here’s what the research has found
Reduces inflammation and pain
A study published in the journal of Inflammation, found that Earthing may be an accessible and natural way to reduce and prevent chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases.
According to the research, earthing can produce “measureable differences in the concentrations of white blood cells, cytokines and other molecules involved in the inflammatory response.”
What’s more, Earthing was found to reduce pain and alter numbers of circulating neutrophils and lymphocyctes.
Improves blood circulation
Another study at the University of California found that one hour of grounding with the surface of the earth appears to promote significant increase in blood flow regulation to the head and torso that may enhance skin tissue repair, health, and vitality, and optimize facial appearance.
A study published in Psychology Reports: Mental and Physical Health, found that one hour of Earthing reduces stress and induces relaxation more efficiently than relaxing on a comfortable recliner chair with a pillow and mat.
Reduces Blood Viscosity – a major factor in cardiovascular disease
In the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, it was found that grounding increases the surface charge on RBCs and thereby reduces blood viscosity and clumping.
It concluded that Earthing may be “one of the simplest and yet most profound interventions for helping reduce cardiovascular risk.”
In one study, participants were grounded to the Earth during sleep for 8 weeks in their own beds using a conductive mattress pad.
After 8 weeks, it was found that Earthing can improve circadian rhythm and reduce sleep dysfunction, pain and stress.
Here’s how to actually practice it…properly
Now I know that all of that research makes you want to try Earthing, but what’s the recommended way to try it?
Obviously, walking outside barefoot is the easiest and cheapest way to ground yourself.
If you live near an ocean, or swimmable natural body of water, this can be great as well.
To do Earthing, you just have to be in direct contact with rock, dirt or water. The beach and ocean is an easy way to do it because of the sand and salt water. Salt water is very high in magnesium as well.
You can also try Earthing mats, which can be used under your feet while you’re sitting down. You can also use an Earthing sheet which fits on any bed size.
How do these “mats” work?
You just plug in to the grounding wire port of a normal 3-prong outlet and the Earth’s natural electrons flow right up through the wire and onto the mat.
It’s certainly an interesting practice and there really isn’t any harm in trying. All you have to do is spend an hour a day outside with your bare feet.
It’s something I’m definitely going to try. What about you? Think it’s crazy or will you give it a shot? Let me know below!
