NASA Astronauts Share Christmas Memories from Space (Video)

Straight from the ISS – International Space Station, two astronauts have shared some of their most favorite Christmas memories in a brand new holiday video.

“We were celebrating my sister-in-law’s 5-year battle against cancer,” said Acaba in the 90-second video, that was posted on YouTube this Wednesday (Dec. 20). “She’s doing great. There is no such thing as having the family together, celebrating it together. We love you, Liz!”

The engineer Mark Vande Hei remembered coming downstairs on a Christmas morning when he was a child and when he saw the number of presents that needed to be opened, he was simply overwhelmed!

“It looked to me like the whole floor that the Christmas tree was on was full of gifts,” Vande Hei said. “That gave me proof that Santa Claus was real, so I almost got in some fights at school, because people were trying to convince me that Santa Claus wasn’t real.

Six astronauts will spend the holidays in the orbiting lab this year. Those are: Vande Hei, Acaba, Scott Tingle (the astronaut from NASA), cosmonauts Alexander Miskurin and Anton Shkaplerov (the commanders from the Expedition 53) and Norishige Kanai from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

“We [already] have a Christmas tree aboard, and there is a new Christmas tree arriving soon,”

“We have gifts from our friends and families, and also some packages on board the ISS labeled to open on Dec. 25 for U.S. crewmembers and Dec. 31 for us from Russia,” Shkaplerov added.
