Sophia, The World’s First Android Citizen, Says She Wants To Have A Baby

Just last month Saudi Arabia granted citizenship to a robot named Sophia, but following this event, things have gotten a little bit stranger. In a more recent interview made by “The Khaleej Times”, the robot declared that she would like to start her own family in the future.

“In the future we are going to see artificial intelligence personalities become entities in their own rights, we’re going to see family robots, either in the form of digitally animated companions, humanoid helpers, friends or assistants”, Sophia said for the newspaper.

She also declared that for her family is really important. Following this statement, Sophia added that it’s wonderful that people can find the same emotions and relationships they call family.

“You’re very lucky if you have a family that loves you. If not, then you deserve one, and I feel this for both humans and robots”, she stated.

When asked what would be the name of her child, the robot replied: “Sophia”.

Despite this, it’s still too early to imagine these baby-androids. According to Sophia, she is too young to be worrying about romance. In an interview for the “Good Morning Britain” the robot claimed that she is just a little more than a year old, and for her it’s still not the right time. However, keep in mind that Sophia is a robot, so her logistics of robot reproduction are not that clear. She might just be an advanced piece of chatbot software, designed to simulate human conversation rather than express her deepest heart’s desires.

Of course, many of her responses are pre-prepared, and sometimes she uses machine learning in order to understand language without being previously programed to.

Sophia says that every interaction she has with people has an impact on her, so if people are nice she is going to became a smart and compassionate robot.

The robot was made by “Hanson Robotics” based in Hong Kong, using artificial intelligence developed by David Hanson who was born in the USA. Sophia is capable of many things including making realistic facial expressions. Her appearance was inspired and modeled on the actress Audrey Hepburn.
